about us

This art school is a little unconventional…

We have two core beliefs; That human beings are essentially creative and that living creatively is what helps us all feel most alive.

Our school is about growing individuals through the practice of creativity…

We believe that anyone, at any age, can learn the techniques required to make incredible art (and by anyone we mean anyone!).

We want you to find ‘your unique way of seeing and making art.’ We’ve learned this needs to happen through both one on one teaching and in an environment with others who are seeking their own creativity.

We’re a bunch of misfits. We aren’t a specific type of person. We’re young and old, loud and quiet, beginners and professionals.

We fail together, we learn together and were thankful for the opportunity to have an artistic space that allows us to be who we are.

We would love to have you join our little art community!

(And yes, most of our students are total beginners, but we do cater for those who have been practicing art for a while, and we even have full time professional artists as part of our school).

Hi i'm jess!

I am the principal and founder of Art School Co. and I am passionate about teaching others how to find their own voice and creativity through imagination and fine arts.

I have been teaching art for 20 years. I have my own artistic practice outside of teaching and have been a finalist in some of Australia’s most prestigious art prizes. My husband helps me run this school (behind the scenes) and together we try and balance all of this while raising 4 incredible kids.

My teachers and I would love the opportunity to help nurture and guide you on your artistic journey!

Our Curriculum

Our art curriculum is organic and individual. Firstly we try and focus on what each student wants and needs out of the classes. We take them through their first term of basic drawing skills and make sure their foundation is strong and ready for the type of art they are wanting to focus on.

There are weekly focuses and practices we all follow along with. For example some weeks the focus is on the medium eg. watercolour or oil painting. Other weeks the focus is on the subject eg. portrait or still life. Then other weeks we look at style eg.impressionism or realism. These various weekly focuses help us develop our skills and keep each student asking different questions of what is possible and what they enjoy.

Some students that become more developed decide to work on their own projects in class and we work individually with them to make sure they have support, supplies and most importantly... motivation!

In the end we really focus on the individual student, on growing their confidence, creativity and ability, whilst walking with them each step of the way.

There is also no need to begin in Term 1, you can start at anytime throughout the year.

All of your weekly art supplies, tea & coffee during class & the option to hang your work at our school's annual art exhibition (Term 4).

HomeSchool specific classes:

We now offer 2 Home School Classes on Fridays! We understand that Home School kids sometimes have specific needs and also prefer daytime options that can align with and support your current teaching curriculum.

We currently offer classes from Grade 3 (8 years old) and above. In our experience we have found that teaching the concepts of fine art and technical drawing / painting are difficult to pickup if the student is too young.

In saying that however, we also understand that the demand for art classes for 5-7 year olds may be high amongst Home Schoolers and we may need to change our curriculum slightly to suit that demand and accommodate younger students so we can continue to run a successful business. If you would be interested in classes for your 5-7 year old please email us and we may look at changing the classes in the future.

Lauren has been teaching art at our school for the past five years. She brings over twenty years of experience working in various creative industries and a lifelong passion for visual art.

Her formal training is grounded in two years studying fine art at USC and then completing her Bachelor of Screen Production at the Queensland College of Art which kicked off a couple of decades of dabbling in film and television production, media consulting and creative management.

La’s experience has fueled her belief that everyone is creative and has an important story to share…  she loves helping our students grow and find their own creative voice. With a personal love for colour use, design and composition, La loves helping people use learned techniques and skills to develop their own style.

She lives with her husband, Shane and three spirited daughters Araminta, Holiday and Florence.

Callum has been teaching art since 2016 and has been amongst all things creative for 15+ years. Callum has a background in graphic design/marketing and is a tattoo enthusiast. His mediums of choice are watercolours, coloured pencils, pen illustrations and grey lead.

From Term 3 Rachelle will be head teacher in our Primary and Homeschool Classes.

She has a Bachelor of Teaching and a Masters Degree in Education majoring in Leadership & Management. Her passion is children reaching their potential and having the self confidence and skills to do whatever they want to in life.
