Working in fast, timed studies like this one is an important part of my practice. Every mark and colour I choose matters, which helps stay both loose and intentional in my painting.

Fast studies are one of my favourite ways to keep my eye and mind tuned into the painting process and observation skills sharp.

BLOCK IN LAYER VS FINAL PASS

Natura, Sage series, “Pearl” oil on canvas.

In this two-hour paint session, I am building up the painting from the initial block-in layer to a more refined
close-to-finished painting.

🌱WHAT I FOCUS ON IN THE BLOCK-IN LAYER

- Getting tone and colour CLOSE (but not perfect)

- Finding accurate shape and form

This stage is essentially a roadmap where I can see the overall vision of the piece and believe it’s going to work

🌳WHAT I FOCUS ON IN THE FINAL PASS

-Building the thickness and texture of paint

-Incorporating interesting brushwork and marks

-Working on adjusting the tones and colour temperature

After this session here I paint in the background made other small adjustments before calling her done!

This is a little look into how I captured the reference for my painting, “The Faraway Tree”

Reference photos are a BIG part of my painting process, and I spend a lot of time and planning to capture a good reference for my artworks.

I am a firm believer that the painting process begins long before you put brush to canvas, and many of the decisions I make about my work are wrestled out during the process of capturing and editing references.

Of course, there are some things that the camera doesn’t always capture, like the warm oranges and pinks in this particular sky.

This is where I ‘reimagine’ the image in my painting process to create the artwork I am inspired by when looking at this scene with the naked eye.
